Darman's educational project for street children and the children in the slums of Medan :
Darman was born in the Indonesian city of Medan 24 years ago - in 1991. He grew up in Medan, which is the capital of the North Sumatra province of Indonesia. Located on the northern coast, Medan is, with its 4.3 million inhabitants the fourth largest city in Indonesia behind Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung and the largest Indonesian city outside Java. He studied economics at the Medan University and graduated in 2014. During (When he was attending) his 3rd semester of his studies Darman started to dedicate his free time to the street children and the children of the slums of Medan. “I felt in an obligation to help children which are 'less fortunate', I want them to see that they are not alone, that there is hope and there is still a beautiful future waiting for them.”
Darman saves his money, which he earns teaching part-time privately and as a tour guide in Northern Sumatra. He divides his income between his own basic needs and the help he offers to the children.
Darman was working in 4 different areas of Medan, but in 3 places the 'inhabitants' were evicted by the government and hotel owners because the land on which they settled was -of course- not their own. Now Darman is concentrating his work on the one remaining area. “I teach the children to read, to write, we draw together, we play games, I give them the base of mathematics.
Darman pays for books, pens, pencils, picture books, erasers, rulers, school bags, shoes, and socks and sometimes for something to eat.... If you want to help financially – Artists For The World channels your donation, with which you want to support the education and future of some of the children of North Sumatra to Darman.
“When I see the smiles on their faces and hear their laughter they give me the power to continue - I feel blessed to do be able to help them!”
